Abstract Opening the book as a scene-setting chapter, this chapter provides a detailed introduction: background, literature review, aim and objectives, and motivations, as well as the structure of the book and its contents. This thorough introductory chapter, as a by-product of its intent, consists in a comprehensive overview of the blossoming interdisciplinary field of smart sustainable cities in terms of its underlying theoretical and discursive foundations and assumptions, state-of-the-art research, up-to-date developments, research opportunities and horizons, emerging scientific trends, major global shifts, and future planning and development practices. The relevant topics, questions, and knowledge gaps pointing to a need for meaningful and deliberate investigation are introduced in this chapter, and will be developed further, analyzed, evaluated, and discussed in the subsequent chapters as part of the systematic exploration of the subject of smart sustainable cities of the future. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.
