Abstract The application of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) for smart cities has started to attract research audiences and interest in several recent years. During the analysis of the research, certain perspectives have been identified, such as the environmental perspective, the perspective of safety and associated security and trust management, the perspective based on information and communication technologies, etc. What has not yet been recognized among the studied papers is the analysis of solutions that address the challenges of the IoV in smart cities and scenarios addressing the implementation of the related digital twin. This chapter focuses on such a research gap, evoking scenarios, and models of implementation of the digital twin related to the IoV for smart cities. Moreover, it presents contributions on more general topics that are treated as research opportunities related to the IoV for smart cities, while at the same time pointing out potential issues worth addressing in the near future. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
