Abstract With the increase in global energy demand, the need for efficient metering infrastructure and energy wastage reduction is essential. Smart cities with smart grid (SG) technology can use smart meters for data collection and transmission based on advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). This helps in efficient analysis and storage of data and significant improvement in power management. A well-organized energy demand management system enables proper allocation of available resources. Precise analysis and forecasting the future energy needs enable optimal energy management. People and things are connected via Internet of Things (IoT) at any time and place. There is a significant contribution that can be made by IoT to SGs. The IoT-based AMI for SGs enables real-time energy management with reduced delay and product cost. It also enables remote billing and data visualization while providing significant data security. © 2021 Scrivener Publishing LLC. All rights reserved.
