Abstract Recently, the adoption of artificial intelligence is gone through the roof in every field. However, during model training and operation it consumes significant energy which poses a major challenge to the environment and sustainability goals. To overcome this challenge the term "Green AI" has emerged which aims to reduce environmental impacts of AI. Another concept which is on the rise is "Smart City" which aims to improve the quality of life of people but also keeping the welfare of environment in mind. As the main goal of both Green AI and Smart city is to achieve sustainability goals by also improving quality in their respective area be it people or the efficiency of models, both need each other. In this paper, we have explored what Green AI actually is and ways to achieve it. It also highlights the applications of green AI in various fields such as healthcare, intelligent transportation etc The paper further discussed what the future can hold for researchers to make environment more sustainable. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
