Abstract This study introduces a vehicle monitoring system that synergizes radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology with a Raspberry Pi-driven sensor network to elevate road safety and promotes environmental sustainability in urban areas. The system enables the real-time tracking of vehicles, the detection of over-speeding, and the in-depth analysis of vehicular performance metrics. By integrating RFID tags for precise identification and leveraging onboard diagnostic data, the system offers a proactive solution to traffic violations and vehicle maintenance issues. This paper outlines the system's architecture, detailing the hardware and software components, and explores its practical applications. It critically examines the ethical and privacy issues inherent in such monitoring technologies and considers the human factors critical to user acceptance. Ultimately, this research contributes to the advancement of intelligent transportation systems and supports the development goals of smart cities through improved safety measures and environmental monitoring. © 2024 IEEE.
