Abstract Integration of photogrammetric methodologies into heritage preservation initiatives within smart urban environments has a major role in the safeguarding of cultural and historical artifacts, maintaining of longstanding customs, the promotion of tourism and the facilitation of local economic development. Temple towns situated within smart cities sometimes serve as sources for architectural marvels, elaborate sculptures and deeply built cultural traditions, each possessing invaluable significance. Within this particular setting, photogrammetry arises as a crucial instrument for the purposes of archiving, restoration and virtual reconstructions, providing an outstanding level of precision and accuracy. This study explores the utilization of photogrammetric methodologies, including aerial photography, close-range photogrammetry and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery, within the context of smart cities. The utilization of these techniques serves a variety of purposes, including the evaluation of the structural soundness, ongoing monitoring of decay, safeguarding the aesthetic and cultural value of historic structures. The challenge of achieving a harmonious balance between technical progress and the safeguarding of traditional legacy values and practices is a complex work, since it requires a critical consideration of cultural aspects. The focus of this research is to enhance our comprehension of the seamless integration of technology into smart city efforts, specifically in the context of preserving the cultural and historical heritage of temple towns in smart cities. © 2023 IEEE.
