Abstract Today there are smart cities that, through the use of information technologies, focus their efforts on improving the quality of life of their inhabitants by using sensors and specialized infrastructure. From these efforts arose the need to analyze and represent data within a system to make it useful, for which dashboards emerge. The objective of these systems is to provide users with information to support decision-making, so it is essential to adapt the visualization of the information provided to their needs and contexts. This article provides a systematic review of the literature on information visualization in adaptable dashboards. We present the visual components organized according to the information they can display and the identification of a procedure for the construction of dashboards. We proposed a component specification for adaptable dashboards, which integrates users, their information, interaction, and dashboard building guidelines to be integrated into smart city solutions.
