Abstract In order to effectively enhance elderly citizens' sense of gain from smart city construction, the influence factors and mechanism of elderly citizens' sense of gain in smart cities were explored. First, based on literature review and survey research, the influence factors of elderly citizens' sense of gain from smart city construction were identified by using the socio-ecological systems theory, and the hypothesis of their influencing mechanism was proposed. Then, a case study of elderly citizens living in Nanjing was carried out, and multiple linear regression model was used to test the hypotheses. The results show that the influence factors of elderly citizens' sense of gain from smart city construction are individual characteristics, digital capability, family environment, community environment, service environment, and design environment. In addition, the digital capability, family environment, community environment and design environment all have a significant positive impact on elderly citizens' sense of gain, while the service environment only has an indirect influence through digital capability. The findings of this study provide some assistance in formulating better strategies to improve elderly citizens' sense of gain in smart cities, which can enhance the sustainability of smart city construction. © 2023 Southeast University.
