Abstract In Japan, garbage collection sites are shared by multiple households, and garbage disposal rules are set by local governments. When garbage is disposed of outside the specified times or after collection, it remains at the site for extended periods, causing issues like bad odors and landscape deterioration. This paper implements a garbage detection system using a low-power edge AI device equipped with a camera. Verification experiments with a prototype system confirmed that MobileNetV2, a machine learning method, achieves higher detection accuracy than Mixture of Gaussian, a background subtraction method. © 2025 IEEE.
