Nowadays, electric vehicles (EVs) have attracted great attention in developed countries because of reduced gasoline usage and greenhouse gas emissions. Even though the stored energy in the EV batteries potentially can achieve the storage requirement of the grid, deprivation of the EV batteries during V2G active power exchange is still a concern. Conversely, the use of chargers to supply power quality ancillary services like voltage regulation, RPC, GCHC, and power factor correction without using EV batteries preserves battery life. Focusing on grid ancillary services, this chapter briefly discusses RPC and GCHC by using a bidirectional off-board EV charger. The charger control algorithm is designed to achieve GCHC and RPC by using the EV battery charger and simultaneously use it as a battery charger or power generator without changing the charger hardware configuration. The proposed charger topology can provide an effective solution for RPC and GCHC in smart city applications. © 2021 John Wiley and Sons, Ltd. |
