Abstract Smart cities concept for sustainable urban development became prevalent in India with the introduction of the 'smart city mission' by the Government in 2015 to make cities more livable and sustainable at the same time. In light of ambitious missions such as 'Smart cities', many cities are aiming to improve livability to provide a better quality of life and day-to-day conveniences to the citizens. A methodological approach for consideration of 'benefits offered by green infrastructure' is required in spatial planning so as to better integrate nature-based solutions into the decision-making process. Many projects have been initiated under various categories. Some of the small-scale projects have already been implemented whereas large-scale projects such as 'Area Based Development' (ABD) are in the process of getting implemented. This paper is part of an ongoing project on 'Climate Informed Environmental Planning for smart cities'. The primary focus of the project is to integrate water bodies and green spaces in spatial planning to address the concerns related to climate change. An attempt has been made to understand the vulnerability of the city to climate change impacts and propose an alternative spatial planning approach using 'green infrastructure' as a nature-based solution for the ABD area under Smart City Mission. ArcGIS software was used extensively for both analyses of existing conditions of the site with respect to the broader context of the city as well as preparation of thematic maps. The primary survey was conducted to verify the ground conditions and computation of the carbon sequestration potential of the site. An interconnected network of green spaces and water bodies is proposed whereas built-up spaces as per the requirement of the mission are integrated into the plan as infill. The methodology adopted helps in addressing: first, the mitigation and adaptation to the impacts of climate change; second, elaborates the consideration of green infrastructure as a tool for sustainable water management. It would help in not only addressing the mitigation and adaptation to impacts of climate change but would also improve the livability of upcoming development projects.
