Abstract This chapter shows that geographic information systems (GIS) is a valuable tool to analyse urban problems and therefore important for urban studies. The methods of mapping and spatial analysis have changed significantly, particularly from the middle to the end of the twentieth century due to the spread of GIS and at the beginning of the 2000s with the emergence of neocartography. Public participation GIS allowed for the attachment of values and weights to specific layers of data in decision support systems. Developments of urban GIS include highly integrated 3D city models, links between indoor and outdoor positioning of users, and smart city initiatives. Considering the manifold utilisation of GIS, the chapter draws another perspective beyond the technological and utilisation focus, the perspective of ownership. A critical attitude towards geodata/geoinformation/geomedia and insights into the social construction of spaces through the representations of space is necessary. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
