Abstract Water resource management becomes difficult amidst rapid urbanisation of arid and semi-arid regions. Rajasthan state in India is such a region. It has a high dependency on groundwater due to limited precipitation and surface water resources. In such a scenario, remote sensing technology and geographic information systems (GIS) promise an accurate way to investigate, map, and analyse this resource and its management. This study discusses the application of geospatial technologies for groundwater-sensitive planning. The study also discusses the potential of using scientific databases which have not been fully realised in the state. The master plans of cities under the central government scheme ‘Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation’ have been prepared by utilising geospatial databases using GIS tools, but integration of the existing and extensive data of groundwater in land use planning is sorely missing. This argument is supported by interviews with groundwater board and urban planning officials along with the study of master plans, and smart city proposals of four ‘Smart Cities’ of the state, namely Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, and Udaipur. The shortcomings of groundwater governance and institutional overlaps are also discussed. Appropriate use of data collected through geospatial technologies and their integration with land use planning contributes toward sustainable development. © 2023 CRC Press.
