Abstract Cities all over the world face unforeseen challenges and opportunities as a result of the swift growth rate of urbanization. In response to these complicated issues, the idea of the “smart city” has emerged. Through the amalgamation of technology and the use of data-driven decision-making, it promises improved living conditions, sustainability and efficiency. The current study examines the iterative approach to the implementation of smart cities, highlighting its dynamic and ever-evolving nature. We examine iterative development as a fundamental idea for smart city initiatives in this article. This chapter shows how urban communities can move from ideation to tangible results by focusing on the contextual observations and perspectives of technologists, politicians and metropolitan organizers. This chapter delves into the iterative development lifecycle and emphasizes the significance of constant input, adaptability and stakeholder communication. Academics, urban planners and politicians who are interested in the challenging but fascinating topic of modern urbanization related to iterative development strategies will benefit from this comprehensive examination of the iterative approach as an alternative method for linking the concept of smart cities to their actualization. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Susheela Hooda, Vidhu Kiran, Rupali Gill, Durgesh Srivastava, Jabar H.
