Abstract The contribution examines the transformation of smart cities, emphasising the importance of shifting from a techno-centric focus to a citizen-centred approach. It highlights the critical role of community engagement in the context of technological advancement, particularly through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). This chapter argues for a reciprocal relationship between technology providers and citizens, promoting co-creation and mutual empowerment. It underscores the necessity of digital literacy, knowledge sharing, and translation efforts to bridge the gap between communities and technology, ensuring AI-driven innovations are fair and inclusive. The study draws insights from the CommuniCity Horizon Europe project, which facilitated the development and testing of AI-based solutions across European cities, offering practical lessons on citizen participation, ethical considerations, and the importance of co-creation in developing sustainable, community-centred technological solutions. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Esmat Zaidan, Imad Antoine Ibrahim, and Elie Azar; individual chapters, the contributors.
