Abstract As the human population continues to grow significantly from year to year, major global cities are faced with increasing concentration within urban areas caused by rapid urbanization. This gradual urban shift is leading to a large number of negative impacts as cities are struggling to face mounting complex problems. To improve the quality of city life while ensuring that the Earth is sustained, these issues need to be handled in a sustainable and smart way. In this information age, the smart city concept is a discourse aiming to deal with urban issues through the introduction of ICT-based innovations and strategies that deliver new sustainable sciences to the cities. As the world’s fourth most populous country facing problems achieving environmental sustainability, Indonesia needs to progress the implementation of the smart city concept in its urban planning strategy to create more sustainable smart cities. This chapter discusses a set of Indonesian case studies related to near-zero-energy building, smart integrated workspace design, and disaster management methods, which represent the sustainability and resiliency aspects of a smart city. The outputs of these studies show that management, design, and technology innovation play a significant role in fostering the development of resilient and smart cities. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Yizhao Yang and Anne Taufen; individual chapters, the contributors.
