Abstract Over recent years, there has been a growing interest in the future of cities and the impact of technological advancements on architecture and infrastructure. This interest has given rise to the concept of smart cities. This chapter aims to explore the transition towards smart cities in detail by examining various definitions that depend on the specific constraints of each city. The chapter highlights the dimensions that characterize smart cities, presents them as a 3D concept, and discusses some smart city models. It provides an overview of smart cities' key features, illustrating each paradigm's components and how they are manifested in real-world scenarios. Fortunately, the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) offers opportunities for individuals to create, innovate, experiment, and enhance their quality of life in smart cities. By optimizing various aspects of daily living, smart cities empower their inhabitants to fulfill their needs for employment, relationships, and modern living more sustainably and efficiently. © 2024, IGI Global.
