Abstract Smart neighborhood platforms have emerged as innovative solutions to address the challenges of urbanization and as smart living approaches to create sustainable, interconnected communities. This study aims to provide a qualitative exploration of multiple smart neighborhood platform initiatives in the German speaking region. The research examines the diverse characteristics, features and capabilities offered by these platforms, as well as their potential application in various aspects of smart community living. Qualitative research methods are employed to identify key parameters. Additionally, the study investigates the practical application of these platforms, ranging from optimizing resource consumption and improving quality of life to enhancing social interactions and fostering social cohesion and sustainable behaviors. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the design and applications of smart neighborhood platforms, providing valuable insights for further research as well as urban planners, policymakers, and technology developers seeking to create smarter and more livable communities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
