Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) paves the way for innovative solutions that can efficiently address the complex challenges in urban and village as well as remote areas. High energy consumption of public lighting is one of the considerable issues, which significantly contributes to the energy budget of a nation. Smart Light Emitting Diode (LED) with the involvement of IoT technology has been adopted as an entrenched and widely embraced solution. However, the rapid growth in several IoT devices has emerged as a significant global concern in recent times, demanding the necessity of energy autonomy in IoT devices. This work proposes an energy-autonomous, IoT-enabled, low-power, portable smart street management system for LED-based street lights deployed in smart cities and villages. It can manage the operation of street lights energy-efficiently reducing the energy budget associated with it. Additionally, it can assist authorities in identifying faulty street lights, featuring ease of maintenance. Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) has been incorporated as the communication network that possesses extended communication range at low-power consumption. The system is powered by ambient solar energy using a small solar cell of dimension 45 mm × 36 mm × 1.6 mm. Duty-cycle optimization technique has been used to optimize the power consumption of the device. The average power consumption of the sensor node has been calculated as 1.648 mW at 3.3 V. The proposed device can be widely deployed as an energy-autonomous replacement for state-of-the-art smart street light management systems. The system has been deployed on the field, and its performance has been thoroughly evaluated under a real-world test bed, especially in harsh weather conditions when solar energy availability is low. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Deepika Ghai, Kirti Rawal, Kanav Dhir and Suman Lata Tripathi.
