Abstract Vehicular Ad Hoc Network, i.e., VANET plays a very important role in the implementation of connected autonomous vehicles, design of smart-city, as well as easy and smart traffic-management and control in intelligent-transportation system. For successful accomplishment of the goals, an efficient realization of VANET itself is a very significant issue. There has been extensive research towards efficient design and development of VANET. Existing works have shown that the hybrid approaches for realization of VANET, which try make a balanced use of direct inter-vehicle communication as well as cloud-based services, are quite able to carry out the basic jobs. However, the solutions proposed in these works bear several fundamental problems which make them quite unsuitable for widespread practical use. On the one hand, dependency over centralized cloud-servers, make these solutions not only vulnerable to targeted attacks, but also, fail to efficiently and satisfactorily serve the demand with the rise in the number of vehicles spread over large area because of limited cloud connectivity. On the other hand, use of traditional Asynchronous-Transmission (AT) as an underlying mode of communication, naturally makes them unable to properly scale with the number of the vehicles, and the area over which the vehicles are spread. To mitigate these issues in this work we propose a Synchronous-Transmission (ST) based solution framework for VANET. We demonstrate that, this shift in the basic paradigm of the underlying communication can bring a drastic change through significantly efficient, as well as distributed and attack-resilient realization of VANET. © 2023 IEEE.
