Abstract The two key sectors in smart cities development are electricity and transportation. These two sectors are now interconnected as a result of the widespread use of Electric Vehicles (EVs). However, with unique peculiarities of EVs such as battery level and consumption parameters, charging time, etc., proper navigation solutions are required to plan an optimized route. Without navigation, EVs can face traffic congestion, high energy consumption, a long waiting time at the charging station and subsequently overall high cost. Navigation strategies can help EV users to take less congested routes, and charge at less utilized charging stations, thus resulting in benefits like optimal resource management of the city, overcoming range anxiety of EV users with overall cost optimization, etc. In the existing literature, distance, trip time, battery usage, charger availability, and other factors are all taken into account in navigation techniques. This paper presents a review of the recent literature available regarding EV navigation strategies from the perspective of coupled power distribution and transportation networks. We first categorize the network physically and then conduct a full discussion about the coordinated framework in planning and operation perspective. In planning, we examined the charging demand distribution forms and the study approach. On the operational side, the costs of navigation, different energy pricing and consumption models have been covered. © 2022 IEEE.
