Abstract The integration of IoT and ML in smart cities is crucial for dynamic city planning and infrastructure. This chapter presents an FSMC-based framework utilizing IoT and ML for effective wastewater management. Wastewater systems are complex, with strong interactions and various interferences, challenging traditional control methods. IoT enables real-time data acquisition, while ML offers predictive capabilities and system flexibility. The proposed framework leverages JAYA, PSO, and GA for optimization, using fuzzy logic to handle uncertainties and sliding-mode control for robustness. Compared to traditional methods, these second-order techniques are more accurate, energy-efficient, and flexible. Simulations show improved time response, disturbance rejection, and energy efficiency. This chapter is a practical guide on interdisciplinary IoT, ML, and FSMC applications in wastewater management, advancing smart urban infrastructure and intelligent control systems for future city planning. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
