This chapter addresses the possible contribution of satellite Earth observation (EO) to Japan’s energy transition. 3D terrain information is the basis of city planning in smart city. In addition, for any future urban development and its energy transition, it will be important to consider the effect of climate change, such as heavy rainfall and intensifying typhoons. Against such a background, JAXA has started to explore the possible contribution by the digital twin of the Eearth. Satellite EO is strong both in observation of sea and 3D observation of land, as well as improving and upgrading forecasting models to address climate change. This fusion of terrain information and modelling, by realising accurate prediction in various hazards, shall serve to strengthen national resilience. It is in this context, smart cities supported by both city and earth digital twins can contribute to effective planning of energy production and usage, enhancing energy transition. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Maciej M.
