Abstract Smart cities are empowered with deployable Intelligent Transport System (ITS) services. One such essential service for traffic operations in smart cities is highway traffic profiling. Time series traffic forecasting, an integral part of ITS, emphasizes the daily traffic profiling of the physical traffic flow on highways. However, recent research in traffic forecasting is more dependent on data-driven approaches to traffic forecasting for congestion management and vehicle routing. In this regard, the sections of the chapter are organized to present the recent advancements with a highlight on research methodologies, data acquisition, computational technologies, and research outcomes in highway traffic information analysis. In this direction, case studies on vehicle trajectory mining and highway traffic profiling are elaborated with illustrations.
