Abstract This paper explores the increasing necessity for technology-based infrastructure in smart cities, drawing parallels from ancient urban planning practices of Egyptian and Harappan civilizations. It highlights the challenges traditional technologies face due to changing climate scenarios and emphasizes the transformative vision of smart cities. By leveraging past experiences and integrating cutting-edge technologies, this paper argues for the development of eco-friendly and resilient urban spaces. Examples of innovative solutions, such as Green Road construction and smart technologies, are discussed, demonstrating how they contribute to efficient, sustainable, and liveable cities. The paper concludes with recommendations for collaborative efforts between governments, technologists, and residents to achieve the smart city vision. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2024.
