Abstract The concept of a digital twin, initially prominent in the industrial and manufacturing sectors, has evolved to find an important application in the domain of smart wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this work, a digital twin represents a virtual replica of the physical environment, generated by aggregating data from a network of smart sensors. This digital twin technology enables real-time monitoring, analysis, and decision-making, paving the way for smarter and more efficient systems. The integration of digital twins with WSNs enhances the accuracy of data collection, reduces downtime, optimizes resource allocation, and aids in predictive maintenance. This chapter explores the evolving landscape of digital twins in smart WSNs, highlighting their potential to revolutionize industries ranging from agriculture and healthcare to smart cities and manufacturing by providing a digital mirror of the physical world for informed decision-making. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
