Abstract In today’s smart era, the integration of digital twin (DT) technology with Blockchain provides/enhances the efficiency and reliability of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) in view of Smart Cities. This chapter discusses about convergence between DT and Blockchain technologies to address the challenges faced by urban transportation systems/future-based transportation systems. Whereas, DT, is a virtual representation of physical objects or systems, which provides a real-time and comprehensive view of transportation infrastructure and vehicles. While, Blockchain ensures secure, transparent, and decentralized data management. Hence, by combining these technologies together can lead to a more useful and intelligent transportation ecosystem. In this chapter, we discuss the key components of DT for ITSs and discuss its integration with Blockchain to establish a secure and tamper-resistant framework. Note that the use of Blockchain ensures the integrity of data generated by DTs, facilitating trustworthy information exchange among various stakeholders, including government entities, service providers, and individual users. This convergence provides improved data accuracy, reduced fraud, and enhanced privacy in the transportation domain. Further, we explain about potential applications and benefits of this integrated approach in Smart Cities. These applications include real-time monitoring of traffic conditions, predictive maintenance of transportation infrastructure, optimized route planning, and enhanced emergency response systems. The decentralized nature of Blockchain ensures data integrity and resilience against cyber threats, providing a more reliable and secure transportation network. In last, this chapter will also discuss several challenges related to the implementation of DT and Blockchain in ITSs, such as scalability, interoperability, and regulatory issues (in detail). © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
