Abstract The global pandemic has alarmed the world. National governments have arranged temporary lockdowns and closed their borders. Planners are speculating on the post-COVID implications for cities and regions, for citizens and local economies. Their scenarios vary between optimism and pessimism, between expectations of a new urban solidarity, and above all healthier cities, and fears that smart digital technologies will dominate urban life, and the state will gain more power by controlling and using the digital turn. These two perspectives are briefly sketched in this chapter. The chapter concludes that after the pandemic digital consumers will determine the road maps to the urban future, and city governments and planners will have to cope with multiple challenges of digitalization and consumption, for which they are not really prepared. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
