Abstract Sustainable development can be accomplished only when we ensure that all humans, women, men, and children, can enjoy dignity and human rights to expand their possibilities, secure their health, find decent jobs, and contribute to their economic growth. Today’s twenty-first century is about how to leap further with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enabling a radically new era of smart cities backed by smart devices. A smart city1 is defined as an environment-friendly and lively city, which encourages sustainability and a good quality of life and is complementary to protechnological advancements. A smart city represents a holistically advanced community with its branches spreading into technology, security, sustainability, interconnectedness, and comfort.2 Smart cities are defined as the arena of integration of technology with the needs of the people and the environment at large. These cities become “smarter” when they continuously monitor residents and infrastructure with the help of tech-enabled sensor devices and ensure improved delivery and quality of services. This noticeably requires significant reliance on automation, internet connectivity, and the Internet of Things (IoT). But looking at the magnitude of carbon emissions associated with technological usage, the sustainability of smart cities emerges as a crucial issue. This chapter has therefore been written based on a problem statement in mind, and the research objectives have been framed after analyzing the research gap. The findings and recommendations for all stakeholders to work in integration for the development of sustainable smart cities have been given under different headings. © 2025 by Apple Academic Press, Inc.
