Abstract The main objective of this paper is the development of an automatic flood detection and prevention system, mainly oriented for residential use, but with possibility to be used in industrial applications as well. According to a study conducted by a German company regarding water damage occurrence and floods in EU households, the participants believed that water damage occurs in only 37% of households. Over 57% of European households suffer from water damage. Different causes can lead to floods and unavoidable water damage. The study participants considered that there are three main causes which may lead to floods: bursting pipes, small cracks due to corrosion, material fatigue or due to frost and defective laundry machines or dishwashers. The occurring ratio for each type of incident has been established as well. The first position is being taken by bursting pipes, the most common incident, responsible for over 48% of the total residential flood incidents. The risk for this type of incident to occur is 21%. Defects caused by corrosion or frost take the second position in the ranking, with a total of 28% of total incidents and the occurring rate is 19%. The last place is being taken by defects caused by small pipe cracks due to material fatigue, the chances for this kind of defect to occur rise to 19% of total. This paper aims to develop an automatic flood detection and prevention system, especially in the residential environment. The aim is to obtain an economical and effective alternative to the technical solutions available on the market. A wireless solution that is not dependent of a connection or a central control unit will be developed. © 2022 IEEE.
