Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive review of home energy management system (HEMS) and their contribution to enhancing energy efficiency in smart homes. It discusses demand response (DR) programs, which helps reduce energy uses by scheduling appliance operations based on factors like cost, environmental impact, and user comfort. the review highlights the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and heuristic optimization techniques in controlling and scheduling household energy loads. The paper also explores the integration of green energy sources and energy reservoir's in building micro grids to enhance energy efficiency. Additionally, it addresses the broader challenges with respect to advanced energy solutions in smart city initiatives, focusing on the need for resilience, adaptability, and improve decision making through advance data acquisition and communication technologies. overall, the paper underscores the important of energy management system in reducing electricity consumption and enhancing sustainability in smart home and grids. © 2025 IEEE.
