Abstract Energy consumption is proportional to the carbon emission. Therefore, reducing the energy consumption is good for the environment. Street lights is one of the major energy consumption sectors. This work proposes a smart street light system based on IoT which controls the street lights intelligently to optimize energy consumption. The proposed smart street light system bifurcates the complete street light network into pole groups consisting of three poles each. One of the three poles in pole group is master pole and rest two are slave poles. Master pole (also called S-Pole) contains all the sensors and controlling machinery in it. S-Poles communicate with each other using wireless communication network which uses ZigBee protocol. The complete system is monitored and controlled by mobile and web application. The framework and mobile app/web application communicate using 3G/4G/Wi-Fi connections. The intensity of lamps is also controlled on the basis of vehicle speed and day light conditions. The prototype testing shows the energy consumption is reduced by almost 70%. The smart street light system aims to optimize energy use, improve safety and visibility, lessen environmental impact, and contribute to the creation of smarter. The paper’s insights and conclusions offer helpful recommendations for the setup and improvement of smart street lighting systems in actual urban settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
