Abstract Energy-related decision support tools (DSTs) are crucial for utility and energy sector planners in managing energy demand and forecasting in the context of smart cities. These tools use advanced algorithms and data analysis to optimize energy use, integrate renewable resources, and enhance grid management. This study explores the development of a DST for smart city energy management, integrating data from smart meters, weather stations, and customer surveys to assess, manage, and forecast the energy demand accurately. It also highlights the relevance of the granular analysis of energy consumption levels and patterns at different scales-such as individual buildings, neighborhoods, and districts. The developed DST also considers singularities of the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, such as cooling systems and building characteristics, and each subcategory was clustered based on their energy intensity and consumption profile. The findings highlight the relevance of DST for utilities, planners, and policymakers in developing and evaluating targeted energysaving strategies and informed proactive resource management. The study also discusses challenges and future directions for DST development in smart cities.
