Abstract Space and place, though used synonymously, are very distinct since space is more abstract than a place (Cresselle, Place: An Introduction 2004). Public Spaces refer to places of cohesion which are extensively required nowadays to promote active lifestyles for balancing the culture of work from home therefore; this chapter tries to dwell on the current issues of inactive places of social interaction and ponders on various reflections from literature to analyse what suitable strategies can be adopted for the case of three identified micro-clusters for Nagpur. Our various reflections on literature deciphers emerging severity of issues in degrading public spaces in the Indian context; therefore, in this study research we have tried to investigate “how various attributes of placemaking can bring new life into a neglected public area and give the place a sense of belongingness. The process of Urbanization is an inevitable phenomenon that is a rising concern nowadays and has led to a lot of conversion of open spaces into built-up areas (Naab 2013). The process of urbanization has led to genetic changes in land use, especially in the city’s core areas. This has eventually led to increasing pressure on the core area, causing multiple and disengaged geometries of the built environment. However, in the last few years, there have been central- and state-level programmes for promoting the placemaking process in Indian cities. NIUA, India, and Bhopal smart city mission are pivotal in creating certain policy frameworks for cities to encourage better places of social cohesion. However, our invigoration in the process of understanding essential aspects for placemaking in India reveals that there is a lot of complexity in Indian cities to embark on the revival of certain spaces under the aegis of Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, HRIDAY, and some other urban development programmes by the Government of India. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Uday Chatterjee, Avishek Bhunia, Jyothi Gupta and Krishnendu Gupta; individual chapters, the contributors.
