Abstract This paper proposes a framework that will integrate 5G with VDTNs to optimize data transmission in smart cities. Critical data requiring real-time processing is transmitted over 5G networks, while non-critical or less time-sensitive data is offloaded to VDTNs using intelligent data prioritization algorithms. This hybrid approach reduces network congestion, operation costs, and guarantees reliable connectivity for different applications. This framework also highlights the potential of VDTNs for applications like environmental data collection and infrastructure inspection, where delay-tolerant tolerant type of communication would be effective. Vehicles equipped with sensors can collect data about air quality, noise, and road conditions, thus enabling comprehensive monitoring and efficient decision-making without requiring extensive fixed infrastructure. By integrating VDTNs with 5G, the proposed framework provides a cost-effective and sustainable solution to address the growing connectivity and resource management needs of smart cities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
