Abstract A Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack is a malicious effort aimed at disrupting the regular flow of traffic to a specific server, service, or network. Perpetrators achieve this disruption by inundating the target and its associated infrastructure with an excessive volume of Internet traffic. The advent of smart cities has introduced numerous conveniences along with new digital challenges, prominently among them being security threats. Among these threats, DDoS attacks stand out as particularly critical in the realm of network security. In a DDoS attack scenario, numerous compromised computer systems, often referred to as bots or zombies, are orchestrated to generate attack traffic. These compromised systems may encompass traditional computers as well as other network-connected resources such as IoT devices. The consequence of such an attack ranges from a degradation in network performance to a complete service outage of essential infrastructure. The ramifications extend beyond mere inconvenience, potentially leading to substantial financial losses and damage to reputation. Detecting and mitigating these attacks pose significant challenges, especially considering the difficulty in distinguishing between attack traffic and normal traffic. Early detection is paramount for effectively mitigating the impact of such attacks, underscoring the critical role of cybersecurity in promptly identifying and addressing these threats.[6]. © 2024 IEEE.
