Abstract In the developing world, accumulation of waste has become a hurdle for the health and hygiene of the people. It is high time that, waste management is sorted while the building of smart cities is being carried and organic waste generation is a major concern. The incorporation of technology into effective waste management is termed to be smart waste management practices. Waste management helps to protect the environment and also enhance the health of the individuals in the society. Separation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste from different sources is challenging. Hence, this book chapter will initiated with an introduction to smart waste management in smart cities, Innovative methods adapted to degrade and recycle. Finally, it focuses on challenges in smart city waste management with future needs. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
