Abstract Considering rapidly evolving technology enhancements, within the last decade, for the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart cities paradigm, significant advancements have converged with various applications and services. Among the emerging enabling technologies, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), popularly known as drones, have attracted the interest of computer scientists, engineers, and researchers because of their inherent attributes such as mobility, flexibility, reliability, and energy efficiency in wireless networks. Similar to other wireless technologies such as wireless sensor networks and remote sensing, these devices are generally not designed with security mechanisms. Therefore, fundamental security and privacy issues and challenges require the attention of scientists and engineers in the field of network security. The existing solutions focusing on drone communication security are quite limited in the literature. Hence, in this chapter, the security and privacy challenges as well as existing suggested solutions in the literature are critically studied. Additionally, possible solutions are suggested to address challenging issues such as privacy, data confidentiality, and performance degradation for the specific domain of UAVs. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
