Abstract Recently, as the drone industry has been selected as a policy task for the 4th industrial revolution, research on low-cost 3D(Three Dimension)model construction is being conducted, and the demand for 3D spatial information construction using drones in various fields such as cities, roads, and terrain is increasing. However, there is a lack of empirical research on the creation of 3D models using drone LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging). Therefore, this study aimed to create a 3D model of a building using drone LiDAR data and suggest its usability. Through the study, building data in the form of point clouds were acquired using drone LiDAR, and a 3D model of a building based on the point cloud was created, suggesting that building 3D models at LOD1, LOD2 and LOD3 levels are possible. In order to create models at LOD4, additional photos of the building are required, and it is judged that additional research will be necessary to automate modeling at LOD2 level. A cost-effective comparison of building modeling using drone LiDAR and existing aerial photogrammetry was performed, and it was determined that it would be more economical than existing aerial photogrammetry for areas less than 16 square kilometers. In the future, the creation of 3D models of buildings using drone LiDAR data will be able to improve the efficiency of establishing basic data for smart cities. © 2025 Korean Society of Surveying.
