Abstract Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has distinctive challenges due to limited processing and memory resources, requiringrouting protocols capable of optimizing resource utilization. The Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is designed for resource-constrained environments. RPL demonstrates efficient routing in static scenarios with minimal energy consumption and low overhead. However, wildlife tracking, disaster management, and smart city applications may necessitate node mobility. The RPL may encounter challenges in mobile scenarios due to dynamic network topology. In our work, we evaluatethe performance of RPL in scenarios with mobile nodes. We consider three scenarios: (a) only the sink node has mobility capability, (b) some or all relay/source nodes are mobile, and (c) all the nodes are mobile. None of the previous works have evaluated RPL when both sink, and source nodes are mobile. We use the Cooja Simulator on Contiki to simulate the WSN and assess the effect that mobility has on performance parameters like power consumption, packet delivery ratio, and radio duty cycle. Our analysis reveals that in mobile scenarios, RPL performs optimally at lower packet speeds and a higher duty-cycle rate. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
