Abstract Intelligent Reflecting Surface(IRS) and Relay communication are two promising techniques for improving the performance of wireless communication systems. In this comparative study, the advantages and disadvantages of both techniques are discussed. The study provide an overview of the working principles of IRS and Relay communication and discuss their key features and differences. We then analyze their performance in terms of signal quality, security, data rate, power consumption, complexity, and cost. We also discuss their sensitivity to environmental changes and security threats, and highlight the challenges and limitations of each technique. Based on our analysis, this study identifies the strengths and weaknesses of IRS and Relay communication and compare their performance under different scenarios and conditions. We also discuss their potential applications in various domains, such as 5G networks, Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, and autonomous vehicles. © 2023 IEEE.
