Abstract Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a growing application in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that allows communication between Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure. The security of communication in VANET, particularly, the integrity, authentication and non-repudiation of communication is a major concern. We propose a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) based cryptographic protocol that can prevent replay attacks and provide integrity of messages, nonrepudiation and authentication of the vehicles using digital certificates and hashing techniques. The proposed protocol is tested and verified using the Scyther tool. Our results show that the protocol successfully resists the possible attacks against integrity, authentication and non-repudiation. © 2020 IEEE.
