Abstract This paper compares the integration approaches of LiFi and WiFi technologies with 5G networks. LiFi transmits data through visible light and can transfer data at an enormously higher speed compared to WiFi while not much interference and has better security, making it very suitable for secured places. On the other hand, WiFi uses radio waves, resulting in broader coverage and flexibility necessary for general use. Performance of both these technologies are compared based on speed, bandwidth, security, interference, reliability, range, and energy efficiency. Throughout the paper, the authors focus on the interaction between general LiFi and WiFi within 5G connections, discussing the main opportunities and issues. It describes the applications of these technologies in different domains, including smart cities, healthcare, and industries and also research gap in this domain. This paper contributes to improving the perspective of next-generation wireless communication technologies based on investigating LiFi and WiFi integration within the 5G context. © 2025 School of Science, DUTH.
