Abstract Decreasing per capita water availability and increasing pollution of freshwater resources are huge challenges as India continues to grow economically. In urban areas especially, water resources are under significant pressure due to high water-demand patterns. The situation is worsening with rising demand due to increasing urbanization. Almost 80% of water supply to municipalities flows back into the ecosystem as untreated wastewater, which is a critical environmental and health hazard. Urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be an important part of circular sustainability due to the integration of energy production and resource recovery during clean water production. Currently, the main drivers for developing the wastewater treatment industry are global nutrient needs and water and energy recovery from wastewater. The current article presents trends in wastewater treatment plant development based on circular economy (CE) assumptions, challenges, and barriers that prevent the implementation of the CE and SMART city concepts with WWTPs as an important player. WWTPs in the near future are to become “ecologically sustainable” technological systems and a very important nexus in SMART cities. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Maulin P.
