Abstract Smart cities and the Internet of Things (IoT) have changed how we work and live. This has also improved our civilization. IoT technologies do, however, come with a number of drawbacks, such as increased energy use, hazardous contamination, and the generation of e-waste in smart cities. Green IoT is necessary for smart city applications since they must be ecologically friendly. Smart cities are more sustainable when there is a greener environment due to green IoT. Managing pollution, traffic waste, resource utilization, and energy consumption will help protect public safety, improve quality of life, preserve the environment, and keep expenses low. In order to make cities smarter, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly, the authors focus on analyzing the methods and approaches involved. They also concentrate on the IoT and its potential to converge with other parts of smart city requirements. Finally, they discuss potential directions for future study and difficulties for applications in smart cities. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Neha Sharma, Jai Prakash Verma, Sunil Gautam, Valentina Emilia Balas, and Saravanan Krishnan; individual chapters, the contributors.
