Abstract Stormwater management in urban areas is becoming increasingly complex due to rapid urbanization and climate change, leading to heightened risks of flooding and environmental degradation. This literature review examines the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a dual approach to enhance stormwater management practices. By exploring the capabilities, benefits, and challenges associated with BIM-GIS integration, this review highlights how the synergy of these technologies can provide holistic solutions to urban water management issues. It discusses the enhanced data exchange, improved decision-making, and stakeholder collaboration made possible through integration while also addressing significant barriers such as data interoperability, technical constraints, and resistance to change. Furthermore, the review identifies emerging trends, including cloud-based solutions and smart city initiatives, that pave the way for future advancements in stormwater management. The findings underscore the necessity of collaborative efforts in adopting integrated technologies to promote sustainable urban environments. © 2025 Author(s).
