Abstract With the increase in population, the transformation of existing cities into smart cities has become a necessity over time to prevent the growth in cities and migration to cities before they become a problem. The presence of information and communication technologies at every stage of smart cities enables the increase in the quality of life and facilitates the use of resources, but it also brings difficulties. The transition of every area that adopts linear economy to circular economy with the concept of sustainability is also experienced in smart cities. The transition to technologies that can support the circular economy has become inevitable. It is obvious that blockchain technology, one of these, will adapt to smart cities with its existing features. However, the fact that it is an emerging technology, and its acceptability is questioned has created the need to carry out some studies for smart cities. Focusing on the circular economy, the current study aimed to investigate the obstacles to the usability of blockchain technology in smart cities. In order to help determine a road map in smart cities to eliminate or reduce the most basic obstacles identified in the literature, their importance levels are determined and their impact levels between each other are examined. The biggest possible obstacle has been identified as a lack of technological maturity. This chapter also included the circular economy by drawing attention to the use of blockchain technology in smart cities. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
