Abstract The chapter aims to demonstrate how blockchain technology can benefit different categories of citizen participation and how this can be an integral part of smart cities. The public blockchain is generally better suited to democratic purposes, as the public domain is likely to increase trust. Using a combination of a literature review, white paper document analysis, and interviews with city officials and elected officials, we present use cases for different categories and discuss the possible implications, which, in our initial observations, are mainly related to transparency and trust, but also have the potential for increased data quality for decision-makers in smart cities. © The Editor and Contributing Authors Severally 2025.
