Abstract Smart cities bring new ideas to solve the social, economic, and environmental problems existing in traditional cities. However, the services of smart cities suffer from centralized data storage and untrustworthiness. As a decentralized distributed database, blockchain provides distributed and trusted infrastructure technology for the construction of smart cities. In this survey, we conduct a brief survey of the literature on blockchain applications in smart cities. We review the application of blockchain in smart cities from the four main application scenarios of energy, transportation, medical care, and manufacturing. Then, we discuss the realization of blockchain-based smart cities from the perspectives of privacy and storage.
