Abstract Bahrain has made strides toward creating smart cities as part of its ongoing development plans, creating new smart cities while improving citizen lifestyles and diversifying income resources. This article examines Bahrain's urban transformation through smart city development, its benefits, and future perspectives. As urban centers worldwide struggle to cope with increasing urbanization, Bahrain offers an exemplary model of how technology and sustainability can combine forces to provide an efficient, habitable city environment that promotes sustainability. Transformation initiatives include adopting cutting-edge technology such as IoT and blockchain and adopting sustainable practices like using electric vehicles (EV). These initiatives provide multiple advantages to city residents, from enhanced quality of life and cost-cutting solutions to creating sustainable living conditions and living more sustainably. Engaging citizens as stakeholders in shaping the future of their cities highlights the value of stakeholder involvement in urban development. As it moves forward, South Africa's urban transformation journey provides invaluable lessons to other urban centers seeking similar goals. This review concludes with an upbeat assessment of Bahrain's future prospects, emphasizing the necessity of continued efforts toward technology adoption, stakeholder collaboration, and policy formulation to maximize potential benefits to citizens. Bahrain's transformation journey sets an inspiring precedent for urban development globally while contributing significantly towards creating sustainable cities of tomorrow. © 2024 IEEE.
